Introducing Asher Warren Bodine!

On Friday morning, we had our alarms set bright and early for 5:30 a.m.  I was scheduled to be induced at 6:30 that morning.  Luckily Rob woke up at at 5 a.m. and it woke me up because a few minutes later our power went out!  We've lived in the same house for 19 months and our power has never gone out - so go figure it goes out the morning that I needed it... Fortunately I was mostly packed and ready to go to the hospital.  I just took a quick shower by flashlight and got ready as best as I could and we headed off to the hospital at 6:15 a.m.

The hospital was ready for us and we were shown directly to our room and I was given the gown to change into and registration people came directly into our room and got it all squared away really quickly.  The nurse came in and started on all the vitals and Dr. Baer came in and explained what he wanted to do.  Since I was positive with the group B strep test this time around, they wanted 4 hours of the antibiotics in me before I delivered.  So the plan was to start the antibiotics around 7:30 through the IV and then around 9:30 they would start the Pitocin induction and then Dr. Baer would be back around 1 p.m. to break my water.

It was a pretty long morning of waiting!  I got my epidural right before they started the Pitocin and I was just at a 3.  So watched some television, read some magazines and tried to nap but all of those are hard to do when you know what is going to be coming up soon.  About 1 p.m. I was getting really restless and antsy and Dr. Baer was taking forever to show up!  They hadn't checked me since I got my epidural but I didn't feel like I was anywhere close to having the little guy.  I could feel a lot of the contractions so I had get my epidural turned up a little bit.  Dr. Baer finally arrived a couple minutes before 2 p.m. to break my water.  I was only at a 6 at this point but warned him that I would probably go pretty fast after he broke my water.  He told me he wanted me to be ready to push in 15 minutes. Well 20 minutes later, I was at a 10 and ready to go (see - if he had just broken my water EARLIER!).... and they started getting everything ready.  3 quick pushes later, the baby boy was out and crying!

Dr. Baer stitched me up pretty quickly and I asked the nurse to get him checked out really quick while I was finishing up with the rest of the delivery.  Asher scored 9's on the Apgars (sp?) and weighed 6 lbs 12 ounces (my biggest baby yet!) and was 20 inches long.  I was a little worried about how he would do in this really high elevation but his lungs were great!   He latched on right away after I got him and was doing great when I started noticing he was turning a little blue.  He apparently forgot to breathe for a minute and the nurse thought he had swallowed a lot of stuff - so they stuck a tube down to his stomach and pumped stuff out and handed him right back over.  Other than some gagging over the next 24 hours, Asher was and continues to be a perfect newborn.  Lots of sleeping, pooping/peeing, and eating!  He HATES getting his diaper changed but that's really the only time we hear him cry.  Such a good little boy!  Hope he forgives me for how many times I have referred to him as a girl though after having two baby girls before him.....
