Beautiful Lengths

Last year I was watching Oprah (which I rarely watch) and saw Hilary Swank chop off her hair for the Beautiful Lengths campaign. It's sponsored by Pantene and takes donated hair and makes it into wigs for cancer victims. I've always thought about donating my hair for cancer wigs but found out that Locks of Love (the most well known cancer wig donation company) sells a lot of the hair that is donated to them. Which made me pretty mad. I was excited to find another company that does use all of their donated hair to make wigs and doesn't sell it! Plus - Beautiful Lengths only needs a minimum of 8 inches. It takes 6 ponytails of hair to make one wig. So I encourage you to grow it out and donate!! Check out www.beautifullengths.com for more details.

Next month is coming up on the 3 year anniversary of my mom's passing away from cancer. I can still remember going with her to try on different wigs and what an emotional experience that was for both of us. Although she had a great attitude about it - I know how hard it was for her to have to shave her head and lose her eyebrows, eyelashes, etc. I feel like cutting my hair and donating it is the least I can do to help someone else feel a little more normal through that difficult time.

It was time for a haircut anyway so I figured now was as good as of a time as any to make the cut! Below is the result. I ended up cutting 10 inches to donate and then another couple after that for the cut. I'm not in love with the cut yet (it will take some getting used to) but it does feel a lot lighter and I feel good that I was able to do a little something in honor of my mom.

SO CUTE!!!! You look great with short hair! I love it. And what an awesome thing to do in your mom's honour. Thanks for sharing what you learned about Locks of Love! I've always wanted to donate, so I'm glad to know that tidbit of info. I will definitely be telling everyone I know to look into Beautiful Lengths.

I LOVE IT!!! It's so CUTE!! And I think it's great what you did with it. Good thing you found out about Locks of Love - I will spread the word. Which you know I am good at. If I looked even remotely good with longer hair I would do it too - but my hair drives me crazy past my ears! Auugghhh - GREAT NEW LOOK!

I love it!! It might take some getting used to, just because its been so long since you've had short hair, but its darling. So fun, and what a great thing to donate to. It looks so long in the chopped off ponytail! Can't wait to see more pictures :)

Ahh Lachelle what a change!! It looks great. I'm wanting a new look once the baby is here so we'll see if my hair is long enough. But anyway, I love it!

I had no idea that LOL SELLS their donations. that makes me mad, because I have given them at least 30inches of my hair. next time I will definitely donate to pantene.
love the new cut. I may just have to go whack of my own hair now!

Aw Lachelle you look amazing! What a sweet gift to give your beautiful hair to someone who is in need. I teared up when I read that you did it for your mom. You have given me so much strength and I know I didn't know your mom, but I know she was incredible and amazing becuase she raised such an amazing daughter. Thanks for your friendship and I really do love your new hair cut too.

That is so inspiring of you to do that! I also have a hard time growing my hair even to my shoulder without going absolutely crazy! I wish I could do that, it takes me so long to grow out my hair, when I'm prego it grows like crazy, that would be the time to do it for me. I love the new hair, but I love short hair for me b/c it is SO much easier to do. My neice Ashlin is growing her hair out for that same reason, I'll have to tell Alisa about locks of love and tell her to donate to the other place.

i didn't know that about locks of love....that is so rude. i think it is awesome that you were able to do that and i know your mom is so proud of you and that someone else is going to be so thankful because of your generosity...when i got my hair cut the other week my sister told me i should chop mine so we could make a wig for my little cousin with cancer...jason hates short hair though and i don't look as good as you do!!! i think you look cute. definitely different, but cute!

I LOVE it! You look so good with short hair! When I first noticed it it was in the middle of the Sacrament Hymn and I seriously stopped singing because I was totally shocked! You look awesome though and totally have the face to pull off short hair. You will love it too, especially since summer is coming. I will never have long hair again simply fo that fact! Short hair girls are more fun too! HA!

Lachelle, you hair looks so cute short. I donated my hair to Locks of Love a year and a half ago and that makes me so mad they sell it! Next time I am definately donating here.

Lachelle, your hair looks so darling!! I don't think I have seen your hair that short since high school. I should have waited a little while to cut my hair because then I could have donated it! I knew that with Locks of Love you needed 10 inches (besides, don't want to donate there if they sell the hair!), but I probably could have done 8 inches. I love that it is for your mom. What a wonderful way to remember her!

Okay after reading your blog I'm committing to it. I will grow my hair out until next summer and then have it chopped off and given to Beautiful Lengths. I need to grow my hair a little longer than what yours was, because I don't think my face could handle super short hair. I'm so glad you found out about Locks of Love. Okay, since I wrote this down for all to read that means you can feel free to hold me to it so that I 1) actually grow my hair out and 2) cut it all off next summer. Thanks for being the inspiration-I'm so grateful to know you!

How funny--- well a total coincidence. I just got done chopping off around 9 inches from Ashlin's hair TODAY and then I read this tonight! I was planning to blog about it tomorrow when I get a good picture of her and her chopped off pony. But- I also saw Hilary Swank talk about it--only on Rachael Ray. So I decided to check out Pantene before we made any decisions about cutting Ashlin's hair. She was getting tired of it being so long and was really ready for a cut but- so was I it was getting hard to care for. She had been saving it for Locks of Love but I knew that they had those problems you mentioned you need 10 inches and they sell most of it. So when I read (no Erin never did tell me) that you only needed 8 for Pantene, I figured we were good to go. We chopped it. I was so scared at how short I was making it as I just cut and cut and cut, it took a lot of chopping to get through the ponytail. Now she has this cute little A-line do, that is so cute on her. She loves it and so does everyone who has seen it. I actually cut it myself and it needs a little fixing on the layers since I am not too experienced or great at that.

That is awesome though- your hair looks great. I am so glad that you could do that in memory of your awesome mom. I have often thought of you and her and wish you didn't have to do without her. I can't imagine, that would be very hard. I hope things like this help you feel a little closer sometimes. I am sure she really is always with you and watching over you because she loves you sooo much.

Wow! Way cute and way to go! It looks great! I'm actually going to be getting mine cut this week. I'll probably go short-not as short as you but above my shoulders maybe. We'll see if i'm brave enough! AH! Wish me luck!

Woah! I just clicked on Rachel and Trent's link by curiosity and I totally know Trent! I used to hang out with him and his little band in HS! I ran into him and his wife at the temple not to long ago. Crazy! How do you know them? Through her? So cool!

What an amazing idea! You are such an inspiration! If I ever get the courage to chop my hair off, I will definitely consider donating it-my grandma went through the whole schpele 2x, and I would love to do it in honor of her. I have attempted cutting off like 8 inches for a year now, but am so chicken! Your hair looks so cute short! I hope you are doing well.

I know I told you that I love your hair, it didn't dawn on me that you did it for your mom! Totally made me cry, since I understand a bit about what your mom went through , losing her hair and wig shopping and such! I think it is wonderful that you did that for her. Thanks for the info about Beautiful Lengths. I'll make sure to tell people about it! Sounds like a good company!!

I think it looks great! I did the same thing in November. They even sent me a personalized letter to say thank you. So who needs locks of love? I would totally do it again. You go girl!
Hopefully I'll be able to see you when I come down in April. :) Cute baby!
